The Crabtree of Watervale produce small quantities of premium table wines at Watervale in the Clare Valley, South Australia. The grapes are grown in our own vineyard of 35 acres which surrounds the house and winery. Our vineyard soil is the classic shaly red loam, which has made the Rieslings of Watervale famous. The red grapes varieties are on the deeper soils. |
In 1998, Robert Crabtree and his wife, Elizabeth moved to their present Clare Valley property, which was planted to vines in the 1920s. In 1987/88, they established a modern winemaking facility that has gradually increased to about 4,500 cases. Their 34 acres vineyard has varied soil conditions, mostly red loam over shale with some sandy patches and some prized black, heavier soils that is planted to Riesling, Semillon, Pedro Ximinez, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. All Crabtree wines are hand pruned and hand picked.
Watervale is renowned for Riesling and this is Crabtree's standout white wine -dry, quite full bodied, with excellent fruit flavor, length and good cellaring potential. The main Crabtree red is high quality Shiraz/Cabernet blend that, after 12-15 months on French oak, is always released with a year or two of bottle age.
